Welcome to Debate
The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) is the debate team at the Rutgers University New Brunswick campus. If you’re interested in debate or public speaking, we are always looking for new members.
If you would like to join the team next fall, please send us an e-mail at storey.clayton@rutgers.edu. We’ll invite you to our Facebook group, the Novice Retreats in August, and get you started on your path to a great career as a better public speaker and more knowledgeable student. RUDU has two full-time coaches and a number of helpful and experienced debaters ready to offer their support.
Meetings are held at 9:00 PM every Tuesday and Thursday in Murray 210. Visitors and new members are always welcome to sit in on a round to observe our debate format or to jump right in. You’ll receive plenty of help with writing cases and preparing for your first tournament.
RUDU finished the 2012-2013 season ranked 3rd in the country, behind only Yale and Brandeis. This makes the Debate Union the highest-ranked team or club of any kind at Rutgers, well ahead of the highly successful football team!
We finished the year ranked ahead of Harvard (5th), the University of Chicago (6th), Swarthmore (7th), Brown (8th), Columbia (9th), Princeton (10th), and Johns Hopkins (4th). We have been ranked in the top ten in each of the past three seasons and finished in the top ten at the 2013 National Championships and the 2012 North American Championships.
