The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) split the squad this weekend, attending both the University of Maryland and Brandeis University tournaments. The team also made it a “pro-am” weekend, with each team sent comprised of one varsity and one novice debater. This not only helps younger members of the team gain experience, it also helps give them a shot at points toward qualification for the National tournament.
While no Rutgers teams quite made the break, two just missed at Maryland. Here are the accomplishments Rutgers notched there:
David Reiss & Gordon Morrisette – 9th Team
Kyle Bomeisl & Adam Bomeisl – 10th Team
Kyle Bomeisl – 9th Speaker
Gordon Morrisette – 2nd Novice Speaker
Meanwhile, at Brandeis, the novices continued their run of great speaking:
Ashley Novak – 6th Novice Speaker
Nisha Kumar – 9th Novice Speaker
While the rankings have yet to be updated from the last few tournaments, these will likely position Gordon either just in or just out of the top ten Novices of the Year with five regular-season weekends remaining. Ashley, meanwhile, continues to hold onto second in those same rankings. Rutgers remains fourth in the overall College of the Year rankings – Johns Hopkins has been closing a bit, but remains decently behind Rutgers with five weeks left to accumulate points.
This weekend will involve one of the longest trips of the year, to William & Mary. Rutgers will be sending four or five teams. Regularly scheduled meetings will not be held on campus because of Spring Break, though there may be an impromptu practice round if people are in the area.
