The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) placed a team in varsity semifinals and two teams in novice semifinals at this weekend’s William & Mary tournament, comprising another great showing in what has already been the best year in club history. The semifinal showing for top Rutgers team David Reiss & Kyle Bomeisl was made especially sweet by their defeat of the currently top-ranked partnership of the year in quarterfinals.
Here are the accomplishments logged at W&M:
David Reiss & Kyle Bomeisl – 4th Team
David Reiss – 5th Speaker
Ashley Novak & Gordon Morrisette – 3rd Novice Team
Stephen Yellin & Adam Bomeisl – 4th Novice Team
Stephen Yellin – 7th Novice Speaker
Ashley Novak – 8th Novice Speaker
Gordon Morrisette – 9th Novice Speaker
While none of these performances will lift Rutgers in the overall national rankings, they will all help maintain current placements, including 4th overall College of the Year, 4th Team of the Year (David & Kyle), and 2nd Novice of the Year (Ashley). Meanwhile, Gordon remains just outside of the Novice of the Year rankings, in 11th, 1.5 points behind 10th, and David is 14th in the Speaker of the Year rankings, trailing 10th by 18 points with four weeks left to earn points.
David & Kyle’s run through the William & Mary tournament involved two matchups with the second-ranked Team of the Year (TOTY), the aforementioned defeat of the top-ranked TOTY, and additional defeats of the eleventh-ranked TOTY and half of the eighth-ranked TOTY. This strong series of competitors and their excellent performance against them bodes well for the largest remaining tournament on the schedule (this coming weekend at Boston University) as well as the National Championship in one month.
Practice resumes Tuesday in preparation for the remaining tournaments this spring.
