The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) has placed at least one team in the varsity or novice elimination rounds of every tournament they’ve attended since mid-March 2011. This weekend at Columbia University made RUDU 3-for-3 in the young 2011-2012 season and extended the overall streak to ten tournaments.
The Bomeisl brothers led the way this time around, breaking to octofinals as the ten-seed and dropping a contentious 2-1 decision to finish 12th overall team. Adam set another high water-mark for speaking performance in his sophomore stint, while brother Kyle finished just out of the top ten speakers at the 102-team tournament.
Here are the official accomplishments notched at Columbia 2011:
Kyle Bomeisl & Adam Bomeisl – 12th team
Kyle Bomeisl – 12th speaker
Alex Jubb – 7th novice speaker
Rutgers missed the varsity and novice breaks the weekend of March 11-12, 2011, when the team split between Brandeis and Maryland. Since then, Rutgers has made the varsity outrounds at the College of William & Mary, Boston University, the University of Virginia, Swarthmore College, Amherst College, Bryn Mawr College, and Nationals last year, as well as the College of William & Mary and Columbia University this year. Rutgers also made the novice outrounds at Johns Hopkins University this year to maintain the streak. Despite the streak, strong showings by Bates, Princeton, and Brandeis at Columbia dropped Rutgers to 10th in the national rankings going into the novice-only tournament weekend.
RUDU will meet twice this week to prepare for Swarthmore Novice, the last tournament of the year before the official NOTY (Novice of the Year) season begins to rank the best first-years in the country.
